GPI Embarks on Player of the Decade Project

The GPI has been keeping track of how various players are doing at the green felt for quite a while now, and Player of the Year races have become extremely popular lately too. The Global Poker Index decided to one-up all the other organizations running Player of the Year races, by naming a Player of the Decade: an unprecedented honor to befall one player who will go down in history as the first ever to be granted this title, and who will thusly be recognized as the most dominant green felt force of the last 10 years.
The GPI’s Eric Danis is the one tasked with this monumental mission, which is likely to generate a lot of animosity within the poker community, regardless of the actual identity of the player to be eventually named.
The challenges involved in the project are obvious, after all, its aim is an equally lofty one: nothing less than to more or less accurately determine the player who was the best live tournament participant of the poker boom era, which began with Chris Moneymaker’s 2004 WSOP Main Event victory.

In order to reach the desired result, the GPI will use its standard ranking system, stripped of its aging component. The maximum number of results per year that will be considered is 12, so this way, players can have a maximum of 120 results considered in the establishing of their PoD rank.
Phil Ivey – the player considered the best by many experts – is obviously one of the names in the running. Ivey is 9th on the list, having accumulated $15.66 million in profits and 5,422 GPI points over the last 10 years.
JC Tran is 8th, with $10.78 million in profits and about 147 GPI points more than Ivey.
Shannon Shorr is 7th, with 5,578 points and $5.37 million in profits.
