GPI Movers and Shakers

The GPI’s Player of the Year list saw few changes this week, but these changes were quite significant nonetheless. Ole Schemion maintained his top spot, with 892.4 points, but the second place man is a new one: Paul Volpe managed to move up two places, on account of his 39th place finish in the WPT’s Borgata Poker Open, which earned him a $12.8k prize. Volpe isn’t far behind the leader, and the top spot isn’t exactly unfamiliar to him either: before Schemion took over, he had led the PoY ranks for quite some time.
Volpe vaulted over Mike Watson and
PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu to land in second, which means that Negreanu is now 3rd and Watson is 4th.
Steven Silverman hung on to his 5th spot, followed by Jonathan Duhamel, Steve O’Dwyer and Bryn Kenney in 6th, 7th and 8th places respectively. Marvin Rettenmaier and Scott Seiver – who moved up three spots to land in 10th - round out the top 10.
Seiver’s upward move was also due to his Borgata Poker Open efforts: he finished 95th for a $7.3k prize.
While the PoY list saw some movers and shakers in its top 10, there were no changes in the top 10 of the GPI 300 list. Marvin Rettenmaier conserved his lead, and no one new managed to break into the top echelon. Several players managed to break into the top 300 though: Jeremy Kottler landed straight in 161st place. Anthony Zinno, Owen Crowe and Ryan Riess were also among the fresh faces.
Zinno’s ascent was also due to his Borgata Poker Open antics: he was the one who actually won the event, taking down the $825k top prize.
For every one of the new entries, a player had to be dropped from the top 300: Allen Cunningham was one of these players. Brandon Cantu and Mike Sexton were also dropped.
