GPI Update – Ivey Back in Top 300

The GPI’s Player of the Year race looks more and more stable with less and less movement each passing week. Not only did Mike McDonald manage to hang on to his top spot yet again, everyone stayed put within the top 10, with the exception of Jeremy Nock, who shot into 10th place, having climbed 111 positions, straight out of the blue. One can’t help but wonder exactly what Nock has accomplished to have made such a spectacular upward move, and the answer is: he won the SkyPoker UK Poker Championships’ £3k high roller, taking down a $102k prize. He also had a deep run in the Paris Open of Poker, making it all the way to 4th place, and taking down $20.5k for his efforts. Everything added up, Nock has racked up some $200k in poker tournament profits thus far in 2014.

Unlike the PoY rankings, the GPI’s top 300 saw plenty of movers and shakers in its top 10 as well as all the way down to the 300th spot. Within the top 10, PokerStars pro Jason Mercier managed to climb one place, landing in 4th place. He is currently followed by Philipp Gruissem who climbed a spot too, into 5th, and Dan Smith, who fell 2 places into 6th.
The biggest climber within the top 10 was Mike Watson, who gained 10 places, landing in 9th. Watson knocked Shannon Shorr to the edge of the top 10.
Watson’s climb was due to his Fallsview Poker Classic deep run, which saw him land in 12th place, picking up a $23.7k prize. All the shuffling within the top 10 resulted in Paul Volpe dropping down into 15th place.
Several players entered/re-entered the GPI top 300, and among them the most noteworthy was Phil Ivey, who landed in 293rd place.
