GPI Updates – Volpe, Shorr Back in Top 10

The Player of the Year list of the Global Poker Index remained unchanged within its top 5, but there were plenty of changes from 5th place to 10th. Mike McDonald remained in 1st place with 496.1k points to his name. Dominik Panka held on to his second place, followed by Dan Smith in 3rd and Vanessa Selbst in 4th. Jason Mercier is now 5th, having gained a position. In fact, everyone else behind Mercier in the rankings, has also climbed one position. Alexander Denisov is now 6th, followed by Liv Boeree in 7th and Fabian Quoss in 8th.
Ami Barer and Mustafa Kanit wrap up the top 10. McDonald, the leader, has racked up no fewer than three 7-figure finishes this year and 2014 is indeed but about 6 weeks old.

The GPI Top 300 saw even less movement. The top 6 remained unchanged here, but a couple of players managed to stage some pretty spectacular comebacks into the top 10. The one leading the top 300 is still PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu, and he’s still followed by Ole Schemion. Vanessa Selbst managed to move up a spot, landing in 7th place and pushing Mike McDonald a spot down. By far the biggest climber in the top 10 was Shannon Shorr, who managed to work his way up 7 places, landing in 9th place. 10th place man Paul Volpe also managed to climb, although he only moved up 3 spots, enough to make his way back into the top 10 nonetheless.
The accomplishment that triggered Shannon Shorr’s spectacular climb was a second place finish of his in the WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open, a move which earned him a little over $190k. The player who eventually won that event was James Calderaro. Volpe’s climb was triggered by Erik Seidel and Ravi Raghavan’s score-decay.
