Gus Hansen Wins Galway Poker Festival Side Event

The much-hyped
Full Tilt Poker Galway Poker Festival has kicked off the other day, though the highlights of the Series everyone is looking forward to, the €2k High Roller, the €10k Super High Roller and the Main Event are still quite a bit off. Several side events went into the books though, among them event #8, a €1.1k affair which pitted players from the UK against their Irish peers. Of course, players from other countries were allowed to participate as well. 32 players bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the event, all looking to represent their nation honorably. The resulting prize-pool was a €32k one, the lion’s share of which ended up in Gus Hansen’s possession. Meant to highlight the poker rivalry between the UK and Ireland, the tournament saw players like Donnacha O’Dea, Andy Black, Matt Perrins, Steve O’Dwyer and Jude Ainsworth register, among other high-profile competitors.
The action was hot in the beginning, but as the field played down towards the closing stages of the event, it became obvious that the Irish would be overwhelmed. To compensate for the lack of Irish presence in the top 4, Gus Hansen switched allegiances, and sure enough, the move paid off for the Irish as the Great Dane went on to win it all, picking up the €16.1k top prize. Hansen defeated Max Silver in the semi final, winning the best of three 2-1. He then took on Dave Nicholson in the final, and after a tense stand-off which saw both players take 2 games in the best of 5 series, he eventually prevailed. Despite fooling around after his win having donned a green leprechaun hat and having the Irish flag draped over his shoulders while toasting a Guinness, Hansen admitted that there had been in fact a lot of hard work and very little sleep behind his accomplishment.
