Huck Seed wins National heads-up Poker Championship

The 8 survivors of the four flights of the National Heads-up Poker Championship squared off on Day 3 of the event, to determine the winner. The star-studded field had slimmed down to 8, though each and every one of the survivors represented a formidable force at the heads-up tables. Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Huck Seed, Sam Farha, Vanessa Rousso, Bertrand Grospellier, David Williams and David Oppenheim made up the line-up.

The first two pairs of players to get rolling were Oppenheim and Seed and Sammy Farha vs David Williams.
Farha was the first one to advance after he’d taken control of the game, following a little bit of a give and take tussle. The hand that spelt the end of the event for Williams saw Farha go all-in on a board of Q,Q,6,4,10. Williams was quick to call him, and turned over a Q,6 for the full house. Farha had Q,10 though and thus Williams headed to the rail with a $75,000 prize.

Oppenheim and Seed got all-in about the same time. Seed’s pocket 8s stood up well to Oppenheim’s A,Q on the flop and the 8 on the turn pretty much sealed the outcome of the hand.

Vanessa Rousso, who had already disposed of Paul Wasicka, Phil Ivey and Doyle Brunson, got matched up with Daniel Negreanu next. She disposed of him too in much the same way: the final hand saw them go all in on a board of 2,3,6,3 as Negreanu tabled Q,6 for the top pair and Rousso showed a pair of 2s for the full house. The 10 on the river sealed Kid Poker’s fate.

The Hellmuth vs Grospellier quarterfinal was the quickest one of them all. Hellmuth’s Q,Q fell to ElkY’s A,A eventually to put the lid on this confrontation.

Vanessa Rousso disposed of Grospellier relatively fast, especially so when compared to the laid-back pace set by Farha and Seed in their match-up. Eventually Seed moved on as well to face Rousso in the final.

The best of three final went Seed’s way after he took an early start and then managed to get traction in the second match as well, which was a more balanced affair. That gave him a 2-0 lead in the best of three effectively sealing the fate of the title.
