Only 8 players were left in contention in event #5 of the 2009 Aussie Millions: the $1,100 HORSE event. The final table action commenced with Van Marcus in the chip lead, followed on the provisional leader board by Leo Boxell.
The other final table participants were Joe Meissner, Jared Solomon, David Morton, Kerry Stead, Anthony McNamara and Michael Guzzardi.
Short stacks Morton and McNamara were given a little bit of a maneuvering room when the blinds level was taken back one level to start the final table action. Despite that, it was Morton who became the first victim of the final table as he shoved all in on a Stud hand and was called by Michael Guzzardi who made a pair of Aces to send him to the rail.
Leo Boxell came into the final table a close second in the chip count to Van Marcus. Soon though, he lost a big pot to the latter on a Stud hand. After that it was all downhill for him and he busted out on the next orbit at the hands of Michael Guzzardi.
Guzzardi’s rampage continued as he eliminated Meissner next in a Holdem hand. Meissner pushed all in on his A,K only to find a caller in Guzzardi who had 6,6. The board brought no K or A, and Meissner was done.
Anthony McNamara’s stack was slowly nearing the felt when he pushed all-in against Van Marcus and Michael Guzzardi. The two then proceeded to check the hand down all the way to showdown. They split the pot as Van Marcus took the low and Guzzardi the high half of it, leaving McNamara penniless and eliminated.
Guzzardi, responsible for all eliminations at the final table up to that moment, was the next to exit. He busted out on a hand of Omaha hi/lo at the hands of Jarred Solomon.
That elimination gave Solomon a nice lead going into heads-up play, but it still took him over 2 hours to shake Van Marcus off. The victory earned him $30,380 and a championship ring. Van Marcus got $20,580 for his efforts.
