Jean “Prince” Gaspard dominated play at the WSOP-C New Orleans Final Table, chopping the prize-money with Ken Christopher and Billy Kopp, but eventually taking it all the way for a $161,175 prize and a championship ring, not to mention the $10,000 WSOP Main Event Seat and $1,000 for travel-related expenses.
Kurt Scheer was the player who started the final table action in the most vulnerable position: that of the short-stack. He managed to double up through Justin Allen though and scored another nice pot against Billy Kopp to kick and claw his way back from the edge of extinction. He couldn’t avoid his fate though. He tangled with Jean Gaspard in a hand in which he hit a nut flush and the money went into the middle on the turn. Gaspard had made a set on the turn, but the river paired the board to give him a boat and to send Scheer home in ninth.
The short-stacks were cut no slack at this final table. As soon as Scheer was gone, the new short-stack, Kenny Milam found himself under pressure from Kopp. His A,7 was no match for Billy Kopp’s K,K though and he was done in 8th.
Gaspard scored several non-decisive wins to add to his stack along the way, and eventually managed to get Justin Allen all-in on an A,J vs 4,4 match-up. Gaspard’s pocket pair held up to send Allen packing in 7th.
Anita Vasquez shoved her remaining chips in next and got called by Gaspard and Ken Christopher. Christopher, who had a pair of Ks in his pocket ended up taking the pot and sending Vasquez home in 6th.
Christopher was responsible for the following elimination as well. He and Gaspard tangled again in a hand in which Daniel Walsh decided to come in over the top on his pocket 10s. Gaspard wisely got out of the way, allowing Christopher’s pocket rockets to dismantle Walsh’s 10,10 and to send him home in 5th.
Steven McKoy found his way to the rail next, aided by the same Ken Christopher.
The remaining 3 players reached a deal then and based on their respective stack sizes, Gaspard was declared the winner. Billy Kopp got a $123,837 prize, and Christopher took home $111,097.
