LA Poker Classic Day 3 report

The WPT’s LA Poker Classic saw 137 players belly up to the tables of the Commerce Casino as Day 3 action kicked off. The money bubble was set for the first 63 players, and it would burst this day. Kofi Farkye, the player considered a surprise presence in the top 10 at the end of Day 2 managed to maneuver his already impressive stack masterfully, and at the end of Day 3 it was him who stood atop the provisional chip leader board with 837,500 chips. Mike Sowers also did well and finished the day in second behind Farkye. Some of the biggest names still remaining in the field after Day 2 busted out on Day 3. Phil Ivey was among the ‘name’ pros sent to the rail.

The same fate befell Liz Lieu, who had bled the majority of her chips away before she got the last of her stack in on a pair of Qs against an opponent’s A,K. The A that fell on the turn sealed her fate ending her LAPC run.
Yevgeniy Timoshenko, the young Russian who is fast becoming a regular presence at the highest stakes live tables all over the world, was bounced by Donald D’Auria (who by the way finished 3rd at the end of the day). D’Auria’s A,Q caught two pairs on a board of Q,3,6,A,J against Timoshenko’s K,J.

Antonio Esfandiari had finished Day 2 in the chip lead, but his magic wouldn’t work on Day 3. He kept losing his chips and soon found himself one of the short-stacks. He shoved all-in on the last level, on an A,K and got called by Mike Sowers who tabled an A,Q. Esfandiari’s hand survived the flop, but the Q on the turn ended his day and sent him to the rail in 6th position, just two places off the bubble.
Chris Ferguson had a much better Day 3: he doubled up right before the day was called. He eventually ended up in 8th place, with 465,500 chips.
Despite the pro bust-outs, the field remains extremely tough for Day 4, which means the competition will probably remain highly spectacular.
