The Latin American Poker Tour’s San Jose stop saw around 80% of the starting field eliminated on Day 1. The quality of play was outstanding as the first day’s action was highlighted by names like Humberto Brenes, Eddy Sabat, Carter Gill, Victor Ramdin and Stephen Chidwick. There were 219 players at the tables when the hostilities commenced, and at the end of the day, a mere 38 players were left in the running.
British professional Rob Woodcock took the provisional chip lead with 181,300 chips. Eddy Sabat’s day started out on a positive note, but it soon turned into a disaster. He couldn’t get anything going after he managed to double up early and soon found himself in the position of having to put his tournament life on the line. He pushed all-in on the river, on a Q,10 against an opponent’s Q,J. The board was J,10,5,2,6 and thus he succumbed to the top pair.
Other notable Day 1 eliminations were those of Stephen Chidwick, Andre Akkari and David Plastik. Plastik managed to trick Tark Abboud into calling his A,K with A,J but the board which came Q,A,J,7,9 turned the tide against him.
Alex Brenes had an especially rough ride on Day 1, which eventually led to his demise. His seat right next to his brother’s, he found the going rather tough throughout the day. Eventually, his stack slimmed down by the end of the day, to the point when it made sense for him to go all-in preflop on a 9d,10d. One of his opponents was quick to call him though with A,J and things were looking bleak for Brenes. The flop of 6,3,3 left him with even fewer hopes, but the 10 on the turn hit him dead on. As if it was a playing a cruel game with him, Lady Luck put a J on the table on the river, to hit his opponent with the higher pair and to send him packing. Unable to repeat his last LAPT performance (when he reached the final table) Alex Brenes wasn’t going to be lonely at the rail for long. His brother Humberto soon joined him as well as Victor Ramdin and Shirley Rosario.
On the chip leader board, Rob Woodcock was followed by Ryan Fee in second and Brent Scheirbon in 3rd.
