Lesniak on PokerStars’ Chances in New Jersey

The world’s largest online poker site, PokerStars has seen its first attempt to return to the US market via Atlantic City nipped in the bud as it became obvious that there were plenty of interests in the Garden City vehemently opposed to PokerStars’ presence in the newly legalized online poker market. While some of these interests claim that having offered games illegally there for years, PokerStars are and will not be eligible to receive a license, the reasons behind the efforts to keep the largest poker operation away from the US market may indeed be radically different. Whether the potential competition would like to see PokerStars shut out of the New Jersey market or not doesn’t seem to matter to a number of lawmakers though, who from the very beginnings of the legalization drive have envisioned a competitive local market with PokerStars a part of the picture.

State Senator Raymond Lesniak said the other day that PokerStars would indeed be granted a license in New Jersey at one point, but he also iterated it that he was only voicing his own personal opinion and that the decision in the matter would obviously belong to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. He also said that he had no inside information regarding the eventual decision on the matter.

Lesniak also acknowledged the existence of interests working against PokerStars, aiming to keep the operator away from the Garden State for at least 3-5 years. He also said he did not believe that such a course of action was in the State’s best interest.
He’s always said he wanted PokerStars in New Jersey as long as the DGE saw it that way, and he said there were signs things were evolving in that direction.
PokerStars are apparently committed to setting up their North American headquarters in Atlantic City, despite the early setbacks.
