The Colossus may well turn out to be the most successful
WSOP event of all time. Set to kick off today, the poker tournament had already been proclaimed the biggest ever earlier this month, but on Thursday, it was made public that some 14,000 players had decided to put up the $565 buy-in for a chance to take home a share of the $5 million guarantee. While 14k seems like an impressive number of participants indeed, there's still plenty of room in the tournament. According to organizers, they can handle in excess of 24k players in any given tournament. The Colossus will feature 2 starting days: Friday and Saturday, and registration will only close on Saturday, so the final numbers are still to be found out.

Thus far, the WSOP event with the most registrants was the 2006 Main Event, which drew a starting field of 8,773 players. The re-entry event to have generated the most registrations was the 2014 Millionaire Maker, which saw the $1.5k buy-in tossed 7,977 times in the middle. Needless to say, the Colossus already has both of these events topped, and it allows for no fewer than 4 re-entries per player, so it is only likely to grow more and more impressive prize-pool and entries-wise.
The unique draw of the Colossus is obvious: for many players, it represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of poker history. Those looking to register for the event have to endure hours upon hours of waiting in line, but apparently everyone deems it worth their while and why wouldn't they? The buy-in is indeed extremely interesting and there will scores of recreational players in the field.
