Looking back at 2010 – women more successful than ever

Everyone even remotely interested in poker knows that women are a rare sight in cardrooms (both online and offline ones), and even more so at the final tables of various high profile live poker events. 2010 saw the emergence of the competitive female poker player. No longer hindered by eye-candy status, serious female poker players burst onto the scene in force, scoring several high-profile tournament wins and taking down millions of dollars in prizes. Vanessa Selbst was beyond doubt the trail-blazer, winning no fewer than 2 major live poker tournaments and finishing deep in another one. Her crown jewel for 2010 was her Partouche Poker Tour Main Event win, which netted her a profit of $1.8 million. She won the NAPT’s Mohegan Sun Main Event too, collecting $750k.
Her 4th place finish in the EPT’s London High Roller event was worth $226k.

Liv Boeree was the surprise winner of the EPT San Remo Main Event, a feat which earned her a $1.69 million reward.
Other women who did extremely well in 2010 were: Annette Obrestad (who won the EPT’s London Main Event), Annie Duke (who kicked off the whole deal by winning the NBC Heads-up Championship for a cool $500k) and Vanessa Rousso (who finished 3rd in the WPT’s Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic and 8th in the WSOP’s Heads-up Championship). Young Shin Im was the last one to add her name to the list, by winning the APPT’s Cebu Main Event.

The biggest poker festival of the year, the WSOP didn’t really yield any female victories, outside the ladies’ event which turned out to be quite a fiasco too, thanks to all the male players who decided to intrude for whatever reason.
Annette Obrestad’s statement that the event was easy money due to the general inability of females to play poker, didn’t help a lot either.
