Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon Main Event – Tom Alner Wins

On Sunday, the third edition of the Macau Poker Cup’s Red Dragon Main Event, a
poker tournament offering a HK$1 million guarantee, went into the books. The player who walked away with the lion’s share of the goods in the end was Britain’s Tom Alner, who pocketed the HK$823k top prize, together with the bragging rights of course. Alner bested an initial starting field of 645 players, striking a 4-way deal on his way to victory.
Jason Chong from Singapore was the last player standing between Alner and the spoils. Wilson Fu of China and Victor Sheerman of Russia were also involved in the 4-way deal at the top.
The final day of the event saw 21 players return to the tables, with the eventual winner holding the 6th largest stack. Brian Yip from Hong Kong was the start-of-the-day chip leader.
Yip did in fact end up making a nice deep run, but in the end he faded away in 6th place, picking up HK$253k for his efforts.
Yip was followed to the rail by New Zealand’s Thomas Ward, whose elimination in 5th place flipped a deal-making switch for the remainder of the field: the agreement that they reached divided the remaining prize-money according to the stack-sizes, leaving HK$100k to play for. This is how the 3rd and 4th place finishers both took home more money than the eventual winner, and this is how Russia’s Victor Sheerman finished the event as the biggest winner.
The heads-up stage of the action between Alner and Jason Chong lasted for only a couple of hands. On the second hand of the match-up, Alner pushed all-in with pocket 7s and Cheong made the call with Qc,10c. The flop fell 9,8,7, giving Alner a set and his opponent a straight draw, but the Ad on the turn and the 2h on the river sealed the deal.
