Manila Millions – Joseph Cheong Wins

Friday saw the second and last day of the Manila Millions wrap up, with the 7-handed final table playing down to a winner. Given the small size of the starting field and the peculiar payout structure, only 4 places were paid, so the poker tournament turned out to be one of those events in which a final table presence doesn’t even guarantee a cash finish.
Thomas McDonald was the first player to bite the dust. He picked up an A,10o and he pushed all-in earning a call from Paul Phua, who had A,Qo. The better pocket hand held and McDonald was bounced with nothing to show for his efforts. He was followed to the rail by Tore Lukashaugen, who got his last chips into the middle with a K,Q. Richard Yong made the call with pocket 9s for the classic coin-flip and his hand held.
David Benefield was the official bubble-boy of the tournament. His elimination came at the end of a coin-flip as well: he got it all-in with an A,K and was called by Peter Chan who had pocket Qs. Once again, the better starting hand held and the 4 remaining players could breathe a huge sigh of relief. Paul Phua was the first player to go home with something to show for the time and efforts he’d spent in the event: his 4th place was worth HK$3.1 million.
Peter Chan’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the event. Chan picked up HK$4.1 million for his efforts. Cheong was the one responsible for his demise.

The heads-up stage of the action was almost none existent: it only took Cheong a single hand to dispose of Richard Yong. The runner-up’s share of the action was HK$6.5 million, while the winner picked up HK$10.4 million.
