Mel Judah takes down event #3 of the 2009 Aussie Millions

Event #3 of the 2009 Aussie Millions was a mix of fixed limits and hi/lo split hands which proved to be the perfect recipe for an exhausting 17-hours long tournament, at the end of which veteran Mel Judah emerged victorious taking home AU$ 30,600 and a championship ring. The field wasn’t short on big names, as Sam Khouiss, Tony G, Alexander Kostritsyn, Jamie Pickering and WSOP Main Event second place finisher Ivan Demidov were all there.
The fixed limit betting structure made for an extremely slow start in the
Omaha Hi/Lo event, and even when eliminations began to trickle, the pace remained relatively slow. Ivan Demidov was one of the early casualties of the game, joined soon by Steve Topakas and Alexander Kostritsyn. Kostritsyn got into a four way tussle with Van Marcus, Constantine Harach and Ashish Gupta and eventually ran his two pairs into Van Marcus’ straight to head to the rail.
Tony G and Harry Demetriou further thickened the ranks of those on the rail, and so did Annette Obrestad who never showed up for play despite registering.
It took many hours of play and levels of blinds till enough players were eliminated that the bubble was finally reached. The unfortunate role of bubble boy befell Robert Collina, who finished 10th after his straight draw failed to fill up against Danny Mountt’s pair of Kings.
Fortunately, the final table stacks were quite short compared to the size of the blinds at that stage, otherwise who knows how long play would’ve gone on. This way however, players started falling left and right as soon as the final table play began. Mike Stanton left for the rail first followed by Michael Guzzardi and Marc Furniss.
Billy ‘The Croc’ Argyros was eliminated in 6th by Derek Raymond who made a straight against Argyros’ flush draw which failed to fill up.
Danny Mountt left 5th, followed by Derek Raymond in 4th. Jeffrey Duvall – the one responsible for Raymond’s elimination – was next on the list. He fell at the hands of Mel Judah.
In the final hand of the tournament, Mel Judah hit an A-high flush against Rainer Quell’s K-high one to take down the pot, the ring and the first prize.
