Day 2 of the World Series of Poker Europe was the day when all the high profile players attending the Series decided to make their presence felt. We are specifically talking about the Poker Brat, Phil Hellmuth, and Phil Ivey, who both chose to buy into the $1.1k
NL Holdem with Re-buys event - #2 of the Series after the Ladies Event which Jackie Glazier won – late. None of them made it through the first Day 1 flight, but their presence was definitely encouraging for the organizers, as it showed this year’s Series had in fact gotten off to a flying start.
Ivey and Hellmuth joined a starting field of 261 players, a decent turn-out, but one which was absolutely overshadowed a day later by the Day 1B registration.
The Brat and Ivey only represented the proverbial tip of the poker pro iceberg: other high-profile players who registered and saw action on Day 1A were Tuan Le, Ryan Riess, Max Pescatori, Barry Shulman and Mike Leah.
888Poker’s representatives were the most numerous at the tables. Max Steinberg carried the flag, joined by Jake Balsiger, Sam Holden, Russell Thomas and Jay Farber, but Jesse Sylvia played as well. Besides the all the “name” competitors, all the major online poker operators sent scores of online qualifiers to the
poker tournament.
Farber and Le both put in good Day 1A runs and they spent quite a bit of time near the top of the chip counts as the day wore on. They both ended up with healthy stacks, despite a few hits had taken during the last level.
Matthew Ashton, the current leader of the WSOP-E’s Player of the Year race, showed up as well, in a bid to increase his lead over current second place man Daniel Negreanu, a lead which currently only amounts to 50 points.
