NAPT Los Angeles – Day 2 report

314 players returned to the tables of the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles for the second day of the NAPT’s Main Event. Each and every one of these players came back hoping to be among those who would not go home empty-handed, after all, the goal of the field was to play right down to the money.
Sure enough, the money bubble burst after seven levels. When the day was called, 81 players were still in contention, ready to move on to day 3. The biggest problem for 314 day 2 wannabes was the fact that two thirds of them would indeed go home with the proverbial wooden spoon. 104 places were paid, which meant that Carter King, winner of PokerStars’ 2008 World Championship of Online Poker Main event, would be the last one to go without a reward, in 105th place.

In his final hand, King took on Micah Raskin. On a flop of 8s,6s,5d, King took the initiative through a check raise. Raskin re-raised him, which prompted an all in from King. Raskin only had an Ace-high, but King didn't even have that much. All he had was a 10s, 9s, for a flush draw. King had quite a few outs, but the 8c on the turn, and the 3c on the river meant that his tournament life had come to an end.

As soon as they saw that a minimum cash of a $7,500 was guaranteed for all survivors, the remaining players shifted into belligerent gear and soon heads begin to roll left and right. Some of the name pros who managed to make it past the money bubble but fell short of surviving day 2 were: Eric Baldwin, Marcello DelGrosso, Shannon Shorr and Adam Junglen.
Most of the biggest names involved in the hostilities managed to squeeze by though. Jason Mercier will be back on day 3, together with Phil Laak, Bryn Kenney and Michael Binger. Jimmie Guinther finished in the chip lead.
