NBC Heads-Up – Mike Matusow Wins

After Scott Seiver defeated Daniel Cates, Mike Matusow did away with John Hennigan, Joe Serock got rid of Brian Hastings and Phil Hellmuth bested Eugene Katchalov, an extremely intriguing final 4 developed, pitting two major representatives of the old poker school against two members of the young, online poker generation. By the time the final was reached, it became obvious that the young guns had nothing on Hellmuth and Matusow.
The Poker Brat disposed of Joe Serock and Mike Matusow made short work of Scott Seiver. The two losers picked up a consolation prize of $100k each.
With the first ever National Heads-up Poker Championship title under his belt, Phil Hellmuth was something of a favorite when the final bout began. Featuring a best-of-three format, the early going gave the advantage to Mike Matusow, who took down the first match. To make things more interesting, Hellmuth stormed back to win the second match, and to pull even in the series. Matusow would have none of that though. The Mouth wouldn’t be denied this time, and he took down the 3rd and final bout, securing a 2-1 win and picking up the $750k first prize.

Matusow used to be a Full Tilt Poker pro before the Black Friday events. The ordeal delivered a massive blow to his reputation, to his bankroll and ultimately to his appetite to play too. He hasn’t played a lot of poker lately, thus we can safely affirm the NBC heads-up win came in the nick of time for him. The bragging rights which inevitably come with such a title shouldn’t be underestimated at all either: Matusow disposed of an illustrious list of players on his way to the top, which included Michael Mizrachi, Viktor Blom, Barry Greenstein and of course The Brat himself.
