Online gambling and online poker have officially been launched in the Garden State a little more than a week ago, and that was about as much as it took New Jersey to cut to the head of the pack, drawing twice as many players as Nevada’s regulated online poker operators did.
Monday, the one-week mark for New Jersey’s online gaming, saw New Jersey’s two legal online poker rooms, Ultimate Poker and WSOP.com, draw a combined 24 hour peak of 443 players. That number was easily eclipsed by New Jersey’s four online poker rooms, which – feeding off some generous weekend promotions – saw a 24 hour peak of 848 players.
Legal online poker has started 6 months ago in Nevada, giving it a massive head start. While the size of the state of Nevada is bigger than that of New Jersey, when it comes to population, the Garden State easily wins the bout, having a potential base to draw players from 3 times as big.
David Rebuck, the director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has cataloged the launch of online gambling and poker in his state a great success. Although there have admittedly been some minor issues in the beginning (some residents complained of not being allowed to log on to any of the sites), the whole process has generally been rolled out with few hiccups.
A total of six Atlantic City-based live casino operators have been granted a license to offer real money gambling and poker games. The Trump Taj Mahal, the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, the Trump Plaza Hotel, the Tropicana Casino and Resort, Bally’s Atlantic City and Caesars Atlantic City are the operators currently in the market, each of them having teamed up with an online operator like PartyPoker and 888. The Golden Nugget is currently also under consideration.
