APPT Auckland Main Event: Day 1B report

Posted by: James Carter. - Sat, 2008-10-11 14:27

Day 1B of the APPT’s Auckland Main Event saw 142 players take their shot, a number which brought the total number of APPT Auckland participants to a record 306. There were several “name” pros among Day 1B’s participants, like Eric Assadourian, 2004 WSOP Big Dance champ Joe Hachem, Carter Gill and Mark Vos.
Assadourian, whose father – Assadour Assadourian - had played on Day 1A was one of the early casualties as action kicked off.

Holding a pair of Ks, he did the right thing and trapped an opponent who had pocket jacks on a flop of 6,4,3. The turn fell an 8 but the J on the river turned everything around and sent Assadourian to the rail, one more bad-beat story richer.

Carter Gill became another victim when he misread an opponent and went all-in on a flop+turn of K,J,8,10. Gill did have the goods as he had 8,10 in his pocket for the two pair, but the opponent who called him had the nut straight (with A,Q in the pocket), and the tournament came to a swift conclusion for Gill.

Mark Vos got into a nasty 3-way all-in situation with Bryan Huang (who had been man-handling opponents and busting them out left and right all day), and another player while holding A,K. The opponent turned over A,K too, but Huang had pocket rockets to bust both Vos and the other guy out.
Hachem made nice progress through the day, and he finished with a very capable stack just outside the top 10. He tripled his stack through on one hand where he got hit with a set of Js on the turn. Two of his opponents ended up going all-in on the hand, and Hachem took down a huge pot there.
Amant Nauhria finished the day in the chip lead (with 94,000 chips), with Huang in close pursuit (93,500).

Nauhria’s lead was largely due to a huge pot he managed to take down as the day was winding to an end. He went all-in holding pocket 10s on a flop of K,10,9, to be called by Marcus Veenhuyzen with pocket rockets.
