Fresh on the heels of the APT’s Macau event, the APPT Macau drew a large crowd of professional players who had initially arrived for the APT. John Juanda, Liz Lieu and Grant Levy have all taken part in the APT’s Macau Main Event, and now they bellied up to the tables for the APPT too. There were 125 starters on Day 1A amongst whom Barry Greenstein, Wooka Kim and Harry Demetriou.
Barry Greenstein had had a pretty unlucky run in his APT attempt, and apparently misfortune stuck with him. He was one of the early bust-outs after taking a quite horrendous bad beat. He flopped a set with his pocket 3s and trapped a player all-in on the flop. His opponent was holding a pair of 5s (the flop was 7,4,3) and thus had but a few outs left. Sure enough, one of the other 5s dropped in on the river, sending Greenstein to the rail. Other early bust-outs were Liz Lieu and Johnny Vincent.
Grant Levy, the 2007 APPT Grand Final champ looked destined to make it far in the tournament. He picked up one pair of Kings after another, he failed to get any callers on his solid hands though, and that soon had him on the brink of extinction. On a flop of 2,2d,3d, Levy shoved all-in with his 10d,Jd hoping to catch a flush against his opponent’s K,K. To his dismay however, a K landed on the turn, which pretty much ended Levy’s run right then and there.
Tony Dunst would follow him soon to the rail, as his A,K failed to improve against John Juanda’s J,J.
Celina Lin and James Honeybone were also eliminated. Harry Demetriou managed to double up twice in quick succession, both times on A,Q. First he eliminated someone holding 8,8 on a pair of Qs, the second time he made a Broadway straight.
At the end of the day, the chip lead was clinched by Andre Wagner, from Germany, who took over on the very last hand of the day, as his 10,10 held its own against Anthony Rivera’s A,K.
