APPT Macau Day 1B report - Asia Pacific Poker Tour

Like Day 1A, Day 1B saw a lot of the big names who came fresh off the APT’s Main Event belly up to the tables. The Champion, Timoshenko was there, as well as the runner-up, Casey Kastle. Johnny Chan, Mel Judah, Julian Powel and Vanessa Rousso were also playing. The most bizarre appearance was that of Bertrand Grospellier though, who showed up in a Joker costume and make-up, complete with ear-to-ear painted on grin and green hair. Casey Kastle was one of the earliest bust-outs as his Jd,7d failed to complete a flush draw against Sam Jessop’s three eights.
Yevgeniy Timoshenko found that the APPT wasn’t treating him as generously as the APT had a few days ago. He went all-in on a board of A,K,6,10,4, only to run into Mel Judah’s two pairs (A,A,10,10). Judah himself soon found his way to the rail, eliminated by none other than the Joker himself, he who on just about any other night goes by the name of Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier.
Grospellier went on to survive the day, together with a nice selection of illustrious poker names. Johnny Chan and Vanessa Rousso will both be playing on Day 2, as well as Chad Brown who chipped up nicely early on, held the chip lead too for a while, and managed to hold on to his large stack to finish in a very solid place at the end of the day.
David Steicke became the eventual chip leader, having garnered a 87,700 big chip-stack by day’s end. One of the crucial hands that propelled him to chip lead was one played against David Saab, the 2008 APT Manila champion. Holding pocket 6s, Steicke squared off against Saab’s A,J. The flop hit him dead on, (J,6,8) but it also gave Saab a top pair. The turn fell a J, which was the critical card that decided the fate of the hand. Stacks were shoved all-in, Saab fully confident in his set, unaware that the same card that gave him his set, gave Steicke a boat. The 5 on the river was a blank, and thus David Steicke took the chip leader’s position while Saab headed for the rail.
Dennis Waterman finished the day in second, followed by Steffan Van Khoa Da in third.
