APT Macau Day 1A report

Doyle Brunson and Jack Binion were the two celebrities who opened the APT Macau’s Main Event with the traditional “Shuffle up and Deal” call. The 103 players who lined up for Day 1A included celebrities like Harry Demetriou, Nam Le, Liz Lieu, and David Saab. Most of these celebrities would be gone though by the end of the day, as the chip lead would be clinched by Guray Turkay, with 117,800 chips.
David Rheem became one of the first big names to be seriously crippled, by an opponent who slow-played his pocket rockets. Rheem called his opponent on a flop of 7,2,6 and as the turn landed another K to round his pocket pair up to a set, he decided to set a trap. He checked and his opponent did too. The river was an A, prompting Rheem to place a pot-size bet. He got raised by his opponent and he called, only to see the other guy show down pocket aces, thus beating his set with a higher one. Rheem never recovered from the hit taken, and eventually busted out not being able to carry his short stack any further. Other big names to bust out early were: Doyle Brunson himself, followed by son Todd, J.C. Tran, Liz Lieu and David Saab.
Johnny Chan took an early hit himself, but he managed to pamper his short-stack along for a while, until he ran into Carter Gill. Chan pushed all-in on a pocket hand of A-7 against Gill’s K,10. Chan may have well held up and doubled back up, as the flop brought only blanks, but the K on the turn and no A on the river meant he was out of contention.
Carter Gill went on to finish the day second on the chip leader-board, right behind Guray Turkay. Gill had had several important hands sway his way in the very beginning. In one hand, he called down a player looking for a flush and a straight on the river, while holding two pairs. None of his opponent’s draws filled up. In another hand, he got called by an opponent holding Qs full of As, while he held As full of Qs himself.
At the end of the day, there were but 23 players left in the game.
