The bubble bursts at the Big Dance: Jeremy Joseph takes lead with 1,458,000 chips

1,307 players took their seats in the beginning of Day3 of the $10,000 NL Holdem Main Event. At the end of the day, there were only 474 left standing, among them Gus Hansen, Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Hoyt Corkins, Allan Cunningham, Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, Robert Mizrachi, Hasan Habib and Shawn “Sheiky” Sheikhan.
As usual, the day began with a tide of eliminations. Short-stacks once again got their chips all-in early to try to double up and many of them ended up on the wrong end of ensuing action.
Chris Moneymaker – the guy that online poker historians will forever remember, was one of the aggressive short-stacks. The A,J that he pushed all-in on did indeed have the lead against Dragoslav Timarac’s 9,10, but as the board brought along another 10 and failed to improve the A,J, Moneymaker found himself headed to the rail much sooner than he would’ve liked.
Patrick Antonius, who withstood the tide valiantly for the first 2 days, succumbed early too, in one of those roller-coaster type hands that everyone likes to see (except the guy who ends up busted on them). He started from behind on a K,J against Jim Dallessandro’s A,10 suited, but managed to take the lead when a king came on the flop. Dallessandro made a runner-runner flush though, and Antonius got a taste of the poker gods’ wreath.
Barny Boatman and Jennifer Harman also ended up well outside the money. As Phil Gordon and Joseph D’Agostino left empty-handed too, the field would be narrowed down to 733 before dinner-break.
Nenad Medic was one of the 67 players to leave after the break, before the bubble was reached. He pushed all-in on A,K against Sigurd Eskeland’s A,Q, and retained his lead on the flop, only to get hit by a Q on the river. That hand boosted Eskeland to chip leader, a position which he only held for a few hands though. The first to reach the 1 million chip mark was Jeremiah Smith.
This year’s bubble boy, Steve Chung, didn’t leave empty handed: his seat for next year’s big dance was reserved by Milwaukee’s Best Light as a consolation prize.
Noteworthy eliminations after the break were those of Chau Giang (in 516th) and Markus Golser in 477th.
