Day 1A of the much hyped Barcelona event of the European Poker Tour saw a handsome selection of top poker names belly up to the tables. Amongst the participants were Greg Raymer, David Rheem, Annette Obrestad, Reuben Peters and Robert and Michael Mizrachi. A total of 292 players took to the felt, 8 short of the maximum limit of 300. At the end of the day, only a handful of people were left with the right to play on Day 2, many of the big names were eliminated as well.
David Williams, Victoria Coren, Greg Raymer and Annette Obrestad all headed to the rail fairly early on. One half of the Mizrachis (Michael) also found his way to the rail by the end of the day. He made top set and pushed all-in on it, only to be called down by a player who completed his flush draw on the turn and sent him packing with it.
Robert Mizrachi hung on though, and at the end of the day he was still the proud owner of an average chip-stack, which left the possibility open to him to improve on Day 2.
Victoria Coren shoved all-in on pocket 10s, got called by an opponent with Ah, Jh, and – as one would expect it – an A landed on the flop to send Vicky packing.
David “Chino” Rheem had a great start to his day as he chipped up nicely and built a big stack early on. He managed to trap an opponent who had a top pair – top kicker, all-in, while holding bottom set. Several other players fell to Chino’s onslaught before he started heading downhill. In one of the last hands of the day, Rheem lost a significant percentage of his stack to a player who made a straight on the flop, and whom he kept calling all the way to showdown.
While Rheem had a rough ride to finish the day, Jason Mercier did the exact opposite, coming alive in the last few hands to muster a handsome stack for Day 2.
When the line was drawn after play concluded, Michael Murra came out on top with 87,000 chips, followed by Nichlas Mattson and Ramzi Jelassi with 72,000 and 62,000 chips respectively.
