Because of its high-buy-in, and broad range of required poker skills, the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event usually gathers a very select and tough-to-beat field of players. It wasn’t any different this time around either as the 67 Day 2 survivors began their battle that left but 24 of them standing at the end of Day 3.
One of the first big names to bust out this day was Max Pescatori. He went all-in on his A,8 in a Holdem round against Brandon Adams’ A,9 and got his hand dominated right from the get-go. They both made a pair of aces on the flop, but as it usually happens in these sort of situations the board failed to improve either of them on later streets, and thus Adams preserved his marginal lead to send Pescatori to the rail.
A host of online players busted out during a particularly hard-fought level. Joe Tall, Dario Minieri and Phil Galfond all fell victim to this bust-out spree. They were soon followed by Isabel Mercier, Kenny Tran and Layne Flack.
Daniel Negreanu spent much of the day ‘asleep’ but as usual, he woke up right when it mattered the most. He took down a few huge pots in a couple of Stud rounds and thus not only did he secure his place for Day 4, he remained well within striking distance of Jamie Gold’s all-time cash record which the latter had set with his $12 million Main Event win in 2006.
Allen Cunningham and Phil Hellmuth would also have had a shot at beating Jamie’s record, but they’d busted out earlier.
Negreanu first crippled Luske then Farzad Bonyadi, both in Stud rounds to build up a 1,226,000 strong stack to end the day 3rd in the chip-count.
Scotty Nguyen was another smooth operator (no big surprise there), and managed to boost his stack to 1,033,000 just before the night was called, at the expense of Aleksander Kostritsyn.
Besides chip leader Michael DeMichele (1,351,000) the top ten also included Barry Greenstein in 2nd (1,311,000), Negreanu, Nguyen, Ralph Perry, Doyle Brunson and Michael Mizrachi.
Lyle Bergman, Patrick Bueno and David Bach are also in the top 10 on stacks of 939,000, 806,000 and 801,000 respectively.
