Those who placed their bets on Daniel Negreanu’s winning the $2,000 Limit Holdem WSOP event (event #20) can rightfully rejoice now.
The Canadian was by far the most experienced player at the final table, having not only won WSOP events previously, but having won this very event once before. This win brought him a 4th gold bracelet as well as $204,874. Hien Tran – who came into the game on a flimsy stack of 58,000 chips – was the first one to bust out on the final day of the event. He only lasted 4 hands, and eventually fell to Fu Wong’s three nines.
Derek Lerner was the next to go, eliminated by Negreanu himself, on a pair of sixes. Even though he had started on a A,Q against Negreanu’s Q,6, he failed to improve on later streets. It’s also part of the picture that he had taken a nasty hit from David Baker earlier.
Greg Wohletz left the table in 7th place, after he went all-in on a 4-way hand. Jeremy Kottler had been the short-stack at the table in the beginning of the day, but he managed to hang on and make it all the way to 6th nonetheless. He was knocked out by David Baker, as his Kc,4c went up against Baker’s Qs, 9s and fell to the 9 which landed on the river.
Fu Wong was to go 5th followed by Richard Li in 4th. David Baker fell next, to Daniel Negreanu’s Q-high straight, and left with $78,624 in his pocket. The heads-up stage of the game was complete and utter domination by Daniel Negreanu. He won every hand from there on and busted Ugur Marangoz out with three fives in the last hand.
Having secured the bracelet, Negreanu paused to text Phil Ivey and break the news to him.
