PokerStars ups the live poker stakes in preparation for the APPT Macau

PokerStars’ Macau Cup might not be the highest-profile live poker event in the world, but it will lure participants with generous prize-pools and it’ll also create a wonderful example of how poker can be used to generate funds for charity.

The 3-day long event started yesterday with a charity tournament. Funds accumulated through it will go to the Caritas de Macau, an organization which belongs to the Catholic Church and the objectives of which are to promote a responsible approach to life among young people, and to help them create communities based on freedom, peace and truth.

The buy-in to this charity event cost $500 + $1,500 (which goes to charity). Prizes are extremely attractive: first place finisher earns a seat in the APPT’s (Asia Pacific Poker Tour) Macau Main Event which costs $25,000 to buy into directly. No accommodation or additional spending money will be included in the prize.

Those who finish between places 3-5, win an entry worth $10,000 for the Red Dragon Tournament, those who fall between 6-11, win an entry to the Macau Cup Deep Stack tourney (taking place on the 26th), and those from 11th to 35th gain access to an APPT phase one satellite tourney worth $600. Actual cash prizes will be awarded to those who finish between 6th and 20th places.

The Deep Stack tournament takes place on Day 2 of the Macau Cup, and it costs $100 to enter, (provided you didn’t win an entry on Day1). The $600 phase one satellite mentioned above, takes place on Saturday too, followed by the $10,000 Macau Cup Red Dragon event in the evening. Sunday (Day 3) wraps the Macau Cup up with a $500 Challenge tourney, followed by two Phase two mega-satellites to the APPT Main Event.

Because of the good money involved, but probably also on account of the great APPT Macau opportunities, big poker names will inevitably show up for the Macau Cup, also turning it into a possibility to rub elbows with poker royalty for anyone interested in that.
