The preliminary (minus the final table) stage of the 2008 WSOP big Dance has concluded quite a while ago. ESPN has been busy ever since airing various preliminary WSOP events, and keeping their audience connected to the WSOP’s atmosphere through them. One of the episodes that ignited quite a bit of an upheaval amongst the fans was the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, at the end of which Scotty Nguyen had a meltdown similar to his 2007 Main Event one. Apparently drunk, Nguyen cursed, threatened and bullied his way through to victory, in a manner which left a large part of his fan base utterly disappointed, and others wondering how the WSOP’s quite unambiguous rules in this respect never got to be applied.
Bloggers and observers have noted that once the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event’s final table was down to the last 3 players, an “ugly and vulgar” demon took over as he verbally insulted his opponents and breached WSOP rules on countless accounts.
Following the fan upheaval after the episode was broadcast, Nguyen became aware of the need for some sort of apology. In an email to his fans he apologized for his behavior pointing it out that he wasn’t in fact apologizing for winning the event but rather for acting the way he did. He also stated, that – the same way it happened a year ago – an opponent “got under his skin” and that prompted his meltdown. He also made it clear that the episode broadcast by ESPN was a boil-down of several hours of footage, and therefore it did not accurately depict his general behavior at the table.
Whether you hate him for what he did or not, you’ll get plenty more of Scotty Nguyen as ESPN has started airing its Main Event episodes on Sept 2nd. Regardless of all the buzz surrounding Nguyen at the moment, remember that the
WSOP was not all about him. Watch your favorite in action regardless of who he is, and re-live the Big Dance from a different perspective.
The main Event will be continuously covered through September, every Tuesday at 8 PM ET. In October, it’ll be aired from 9 PM on Tuesday. The final table will be aired n November 11th, at 9 PM.
