Ultimate Bet scandal escalates - Kahnawake Gaming Commission issues first statement

Our readers are probably aware of the super-user cheating scandal that was discovered a few months ago by a group of UltimateBet players. Absolute Poker, Ultimate Bet’s sister site, had had a similar problem in late 2007- early 2008, an issue which was eventually settled, and which didn’t even cause a significant traffic drop for the room concerned.

This time however, the problem did seem much more serious, and as the investigation Ultimate Bet launched into the matter turned into a very lengthy affair, online poker forums and blogs came abuzz with speculations and finger pointing. Some voices decried the fact that no independent authority got involved into the investigations, and as such, as one of the parties concerned in the scandal, Ultimate Bet couldn’t possibly be trusted whatever result its investigations would yield. As discontent voices grew louder and louder, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, the auditing authority behind both Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet felt compelled to address the matter. In a statement released on July 23rd, the KGC adopted a defensive stance affirming that its own investigation had already been in progress and only the lack of an official statement made the public believe they were not actively involved into the settling of the problem.

They also said that in a similar manner to the settling of the Absolute Poker issue, their first priority in the Ultimate Bet case was to make sure players who had fallen victims to cheaters were given full refunds. The statement also made an elaborate reference to the way the AP scandal had been resolved, pointing out that none of the company executives or the company itself as an entity had benefited in any shape or form from the fraudulent activities uncovered at the site. Whether that is a prelude to how the KGC will relate to the UltimateBet cheating scandal remains to be seen, as the statement also specified that there was a lot more digging the KGC needed to do into the matter before a decision could be made.
