WSOPE Event #1 Day 1B report

Posted by: James Carter. - Sun, 2008-09-21 17:24

Day 1B of the WSOPE featured a big influx of players taking the total number of participants to 410. The field included several high-profile international professionals like Phil Hellmuth (late as always), Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham, David Williams, Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly.
The winner of last year’s WSOPE Main Event, Annette Obrestad (who cannot yet play in WSOP events held on American soil on account of being way too young) also took part.
While some of these big names were indeed quite late to arrive, many of them found the rail much sooner than they hoped to.

Among the early finishers were Michael Craig and Jeff Madsen, who both busted out holding Q,Q (in separate instances) and succumbing to an opponent’s pair of aces.
Jennifer Tilly and Scott Montgomery were also among the early bust-outs.

Annette Obrestad didn’t fare too well either. She slowly bled her stack away and was eventually compelled to go all-in on 9s,7s on a flop+turn of Ks,7c,Qc,10s. She had bottom pair but she was obviously hoping for a spade to land on the river. The 2c that came found two other callers in the hand, Huseyin Yilmaz and Remy Biechel. They both ended up beating Obrestad’s hand, as Biechel hit a pair of 10s and Yilmaz two pair (10s and 7s).

Phil Hellmuth managed to trap an opponent as he held A,A against his opponent’s Q,Q. Quick to shove all-in, he was shocked to see the board fall 6,8,Q,3,6 which meant that his day at the WSOPE’s $1,500 NL Holdem event was over.
Mike Matusow, Dave Ulliott, Jean Robert Bellande, Allen Cunningham and David Williams also dropped out relatively early on.

Shaun Deeb was one of the players who found the going much easier. He built up a large stack mainly at John Tabatabai’s expense and held on to it to finish the day near the top of the leader-board.
Adam Junglen became the day’s chip leader after having survived a near brush with the rail. His pocket As got cracked by somebody’s pocket 9s on the flop, but the third A on the river saved him. He went on to finish with 84,200 chips, followed on the chip leader-board by Daniel Nutt with 74,500.
