Not Easy to Become a Successful Poker Player Anymore

One of the most attractive things about being a poker pro for many players is the fact that – the way they see it – poker pros make a living out of having fun basically. Nothing could be further from the truth however. Being a successful poker player entails a lot of hard work, and there’s barely any room for mistakes and taking it easy throughout one’s entire poker career.
The other day, we featured a piece about Gus Hansen and his worries that the game may have overtaken him. Indeed, that is a legitimate worry for most poker players, members of the online poker generation as well as old-timers, because staying on top is a full-time job indeed.
The mistake that most poker pros make is that they put the pedal to the metal in the beginning of their poker careers, and as the money starts to flow in, they relax. They pay less attention to continuously bettering themselves and they begin losing out to those still accelerating as hard as they can. Eventually, those who fail to step up to the plate and show up with a hard-working attitude day after day, drop out of poker.

According to some of the most experienced poker training specialists, peer-to-peer discussion with some highly capable opponents is one of the most important aspects of poker training. It isn’t the only one though, so one shouldn’t commit the mistake of focusing solely on this facet.
A daily session of self-reviewing one’s decisions and performing some hindsight self-analysis can be extremely important as well.
Specialists agree on the fact though that early success is one of the most dangerous traps for poker professionals. It is something that stops them from working smart, even if they keep working hard. In some cases, the issue is a management problem rather than a work-ethic one.
Play at PokerStars and take part in some of the world’s most generous online poker tournaments.
