October Nine Update – Field Down to Three

The October Niners aren’t wasting any time getting their chips into the middle apparently. It was only a few hours ago that we checked in, to report the elimination of no fewer than four of the nine contestants, and here we are again now, reporting on two more bitter-sweet trips to the rail.
The player who busted in 5th place, setting up the 4-handed stage of the
poker tournament, was Jeremy Ausmus. The start of the day short-stack, Ausmus’ journey into 5th spot was certainly an impressive one. His last hand was #129 of the final table. He had the button and he fired out a 1.2 million bet to assert his position. Jesse Sylvia had the BB though and he decided to mount a defense. He called to see 3s,8s,9c flop fall. None of the players made a move before the 3d fell on the turn. Sylvia checked, springing the trap, and Ausmus walked right into it, firing out a 1.5 million bet. Sylvia then executed a text-book check raise for value, making it 3.6 million. Ausmus thought about it for a while, and then, he shoved all-in. He then tabled 10s,7d against Sylvia’s Ac,9h. The 5s on the river changed nothing and Ausmus took home $2.1 million.
Russell Thomas was the one whose elimination set the three-handed stage of the event. In hand #135, Jake Balsinger shoved all-in, holding A,Ko. Thomas thought about it for a while, but he eventually made the call with A,9o. The board fell 8,Q,5, leaving Thomas behind but with still a few outs to cling to. The 5d on the turn was quite a dagger, and the 7h on the river sealed the deal.
Thomas picked up $2.85 million for his 4th place. The action was called for the day.
