Online Gambling Goes Live in New Jersey

Monday was a day that may well end up going down in the history of online gambling and online poker as the first day of the return of the games to the US market. On Monday, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement director David Rebuck announced that online gaming was going live in the Garden State, effective immediately. While there were a total of 7 Atlantic City casinos taking part in the soft-launch (which had kicked off on November 21), only 6 of them gained final approval for the actual launch of real money gaming.

During the test period, those putting various aspects of the online systems to the test had reportedly attempted to circumvent the geo-location security measures, unsuccessfully. There weren’t any major issues registered during the 5 days of tests, but regardless, the DGE has decided to keep the Golden Nugget – the last one of the operators to gain approval for the soft-launch – in test-mode for the time being.
The other 6 operators, which are the Borgata, Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, Tropicana Casino and Resort, Caesars and Bally’s have all been approved and they all went to full, real-money mode on Monday.

According to Rebuck, regulators have been very keen on keeping out-of-state gamblers off the Atlantic City operators’ sites, so keen in fact that they gave the objective priority over making sure that everyone within the Garden State but close to its borders would gain access.
WSOP.com, the online poker site already running games in Nevada was quick to announce its New Jersey Online Championships, an online series of poker tournaments, which will kick off on January 19, and which will feature 8 events. In addition to the 8 regular tournaments, there will be a $250k freeroll as well.
