Online poker action – Gus Hansen rebounds, Cates wins

This is probably our last online poker report dominated by the nosebleed stakes action from PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. As you probably already know, last Friday, both sites stopped accepting US players, therefore the cream of the crop of the online poker industry has been pretty much sunk. Given the fact that most of the nosebleed stakes regulars are US citizens, it’s safe to assume the action will die off, at least until another hot destination emerges or some sort of a solution is found to legalize the games in the US.
Last week, Gus Hansen finally managed to put an end to his losing streak and he did so in style: by logging a $825k profit, mostly at the expense of Phil Galfond.
The battle between the two took place at the $300/$600 PLO tables at
Full Tilt Poker and it was a hard-hitting affair indeed. The largest pot of the session ended up in Gus Hansen’s possession along with many other 6-figure monster pots of course.
The pot in question was a $121,199 one. The hand kicked off with some preflop give and take, at the end of which the 8,10,4 rainbow flop fell. Hansen fired out a bet in response to which Galfond shoved all-in immediately. Galfond had pocket Ks against Hansen’s flopped two pair and the two decided to run the remaining hole cards twice. None of the 4 cards helped Galfond though.
Viktor Blom, one of
PokerStars’ newest and most popular in-house pros, who is considered by many the best online cash game player in the world, did something unusual on Wednesday: in preparation for the SCOOP, he sharpened his tournament claws by winning the $109 NL Holdem tournament which offered a guaranteed prize-pool of $25k. Blom bested a starting field of 201 on his way to victory.
Blom, a Swede who currently lives in London, will probably be able to continue playing at the highest level at PokerStars or anywhere else he wants to.
