Online Poker action - Phil Ivey scores 7-figure profit

Last weekend may have been dominated by poker tournaments, but there were a few smooth operators flying under the radar at the high stakes cash game tables too. Smooth operators don’t come any smoother than Phil Ivey, who – without raising any sorts of ruckus – quietly amassed more than $1 million in profits since last Friday. That performance instantly thrust him into second place on the biggest earners of the year list, right behind Gus Hansen.
Ivey played mostly at the $500/$1,000 Capped PLO tables, against opposition like Daniel Cates. While players of Cates’ caliber would surely be daunting opponents for just about anyone else, when you are the world’s best poker player, intimidation is not a word in your vocabulary. Being capped at $80, the pots that the two players battled for couldn’t shoot into 6-figure territory, but that was OK with Ivey: he just took down more of them.
In one hand, he made a flush against Cates’ A,A overpair, after he had shoved in on an overpair himself (K,K).
Ivey won another such 80k capped pot on a mere pair of 9s a few hands later. Cates had a flush and a straight draw but none of them materialized.
Later, in another hand, both players had Q trips when the chips hit the felt. Ivey had a slightly better kicker though, which held up through the river to give him yet another $80k haul.

Despite the excellent headway that he made at the capped tables, the nature of the game prevented Ivey from scoring the biggest pot of the weekend too. That honor went to Cole South, who took a $233,981 pot from XWINK, the newly re-surfaced mystery player. Though he started his return under great auspices, XWINK is currently in the middle of a nasty losing streak. NoPasaran and Gus Hansen joined Ivey and South in the winners’ circle.
The biggest losers of the weekend were XWINK and Rui Cao.
