Online Poker Could Potentially Generate up to $400 Million a Year in California

With the state-by–state legalization and regulation of online poker effectively taking over the nation (despite the efforts of those bent on pushing through a Federal bill in this respect), more and more states are considering joining the slowly but surely expanding list of jurisdictions where online poker has been taxed and legalized.
One of the states looking at the possibility of legalizing online poker is California. PokerScout and Academicon have conducted a study aimed at determining the potential of the legal California online poker market, and they have come up with some pretty impressive figures.
Having started off a logical point, the two companies took a look at data produced in 2009 and 2010, when illegal online poker was still available in the Golden State. They determined that some 178.3k online poker players saw action in the state during that period, generating an $867/player average for the various
online poker sites. Everything taken into consideration, it was estimated that the 2009-2010 California online poker market was worth about $155 million a year.
Being as big as it is, California produced an unsurprising 16% of all revenues generated by US-based players in the above said time-frame.
The market is expected to grow obviously, but according to the authors of the study, state-by-state legalization would probably limit this growth.
At the end of the study, the numbers the authors came up with for the first year of the California online poker market were situated in the $217-$263 million range.
The study also pointed out that by its 10th year, the market would be worth a staggering $384 million.
Whether or not these estimations are accurate remains to be seen. California is however one of the states with a sufficiently large potential player-pool to indeed make things happen.
