With the UIGEA’s deadline upon us, Poker Industry members are collectively holding their breaths as it becomes more and more obvious: crunch-time is here. Poker’s supporters in higher circles do not rest either fortunately, and apparently a hearing regarding the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act is in the books. More on this burning issue in a separate piece.
As the online poker world braces itself for the
WSOP as well as for the above mentioned UIGEA deadline, it’s business as usual over at Cereus. I’d like to remind readers about the cheating scandal
Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet (the two Cereus network members) were involved in, a year or two years ago. Apparently, the overhauled security system is still rife with security loopholes. A flaw has recently been uncovered in the software, one which could potentially allow a skilled hacker to take over other players’ accounts and to have their hole-cards displayed.
Fortunately, there’s no evidence that anybody has found and exploited the leak yet, and it has been plugged up in a hurry by Cereus’ technical teams.
Paul Leggett, Tokwiro’s CCO downplayed the threat, pointing it out that in order to exploit the loophole, someone would have had to break the state of the art encryption used be the software, while hacking into the local network as well. The problem has been averted, leaving Cereus officials pondering about the efficiency of their auditors responsible with the detection of such faults.
In other news: for players wanting to hit the WSOP in style,
PartyPoker has just launched their WSOP dream package promotion. The WSOP packages handed out by the online poker site are worth $16k each, much more than the standard $10-12k value. Players take part in a PartyPoker points race to determine the 100 participants who will belly up to the virtual tables of a freeroll on June 7th, which will give the winner a $14k WSOP package, topped off by a special $2k addition to the prize-pool of the poker tournament.
In preparation for the 2010 WSOP rush, PartyPoker has sweetened the deal for newly signed up players too, offering them an instant reward of $25.
