PartyPoker Premier League VII – Sorel Mizzi Wins

The Playground Poker Club in Montreal, as of late one of the hottest destinations for live poker high-rollers, saw the 7th edition of the PartyPoker-sponsored Premier League wrap up the other day, with the victory of poker pro Sorel Mizzi. The competition was obviously hot, as the stakes were rather high (the buy-in was $125k) even for the high-profile participants. There was no lack of skill at the green felt either. Mizzi bested one of the most star-studded fields in poker, and unlike in other high rollers, entry was restricted only to those with an invitation.
The 12 players played four 8-handed heats, earning points and making their way to the six-handed final table based on the number of points earned. The top 4 determined by the number of points earned would make the final table automatically. The remaining two spots would be taken after a series of heads-up battles among the remaining competitors.

Unlike in other events, everyone got paid in the Premier League. Vansessa Selbst finished last (12th) and even she got rewarded with $18k, although given the $125k buy-in, that wasn’t exactly more than a consolation prize in her case.
Jeff Gross, Sorel Mizzi, Dan Colman and Brian Rast were the automatic final table qualifiers. Jason Koon and Scott Seiver were the other two players who made the cut.
Brian Rast was the first victim of the final stretch of the event, being the first one to finish with a 6-figure prize. He was still not able to make a profit though. The first one to achieve that feat was Scott Seiver, who finished 4th for a $130k prize and a profit of $5k. Dan Colman busted in third place, taking down $194k. Eventually, the one to bust in second place was Jeff Gross, his share of the prize-pool $274k. Mizzi took home $466k for his efforts.
