The second day 1 flight of the
PCA’s $10k Main Event saw a massive starting field belly up to the tables. The 913 players who registered for Day 1b didn’t create a surprise for the organizers who probably expected most of the name pros to get rolling as late as possible. Isildur1 (revealed as Viktor Blom on Day 1A) got going on Day 1b too, together with a whole list worth of big names. Daniel Negreanu was there, and so were Barry Greenstein, Jason Mercier, Vanessa Rousso, Jonathan Duhamel, Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker.
The massive Day 1b field meant that the total number of participants shot to 1,560, surpassing last year’s attendance record by 31. The total prize-pool created by the participants is $15,132,000, which means that 232 players will be paid and the winner will take home an impressive $2,300,000.
By the day’s end, many of the above named pros had bitten the dust. Isildur1 was among those who not only survived though but thrived at the tables. Chris Moneymaker did extremely well too: having accumulated 217,600 chips, he finished near the top of the provisional leader board.
Moneymaker got lucky on a hand with pocket 9s, hitting a set against an opponent who had made a two pair.
Due to the abundance of big names in the starting lineup, the list of casualties looked a lot like an
online poker sites’ hall of fame too. Phil Laak was among those eliminated, together with Sorel Mizzi, Eric Baldwin, Antonio Esfandiari and John Racener. David Oppenheim, Jonathan Little and Tom Marchese also failed to remain in contention.
Daniel Alaei and Alex Kostritsyn on the other hand survived. They were joined by Dwyte Pilgrim, who looked like he was going to hit the rail too for a while but managed to bounce back big time during the last two levels of play.
