22 players returned to the tables of the
PCA’s Main Event on the fifth day of the poker tournament. The goal was nothing more and nothing less than to play down to the 8-handed final table.
Joe Patchell was the unluckiest of all day four survivors, as he was the first to see his chances for the win go up in smoke. He picked up an A,Qo and he got it all in on it. San Stein was the one who called him with a lowly pair of 4s and sent him to the rail when no help arrived on the board for Patchell.
The next player to hit the rail was Grayson Ramage. He got his money in good with pocket Ks and got a call from Chris Oliver who had pocket 8s. Oliver then proceeded to crack his opponent’s superior starting hand to score the upset.
Other players to fall victim to the early attrition were James St. Hilaire and Bryan Colin.
His lucky break against Ramage having lent him a nice momentum, Oliver didn’t stop there. He proceeded to knock out two more players: Martin Mathis was unlucky enough to get it all-in against him on a 3-bet, holding A,3o. Oliver had pocket 10s which held up. Walid Bou-Habib was next on his hit-list. Habib had pocket 5s on a board which had given him another 5 for the set. Oliver however had hit a straight on the turn and Habib’s tournament life ended in a perfect hand.
Chris Moneymaker had played extremely well for a few days and he looked like he was going to be right up there on top battling for the title. Unfortunately for him, he lost an untimely monster pot which sent his stack tumbling. He struggled around the million mark for a while but eventually, the inevitable struck: Galen Hall hit a top pair to eliminate Moneymaker in 11th place.
