Pham doesn't Want to Play WSOP Event, Wins Regardless

Christian Pham my not have wanted to enter event #23of the 2015 WSOP, but when all was said and done in the $1.5k NL 2-7 Single Draw event, he was probably glad he had played: he locked up the title, the $81.3k top prize and the WSOP bracelet which came with it all. Indeed, Pham thought he was registering for a $1.5k NL Holdem event and he thought he was playing in such an event too, until the first hand was dealt and he was left in shock. He tried to backtrack and unregister, but per the rules of the tournament, he wasn't allowed to do it. Forced to play anyway, he made the most of the awkward situation by winning the bracelet.
It was not the first time a first-timer won the 2-7 Single Draw event, but it was the first time an unwilling participant ended up with the title.

Pham disposed of Daniel Ospina heads-up. Ospina's share of the prize-pool was $50.2k. Pham said that he didn't even know how to play the game when the first hand was dealt and that he tried to learn on the go from the other people at the table. Someone at his table told him which hands were best in the game and at one point the eventual winner even made a note about it in his phone. The first 7 hands he folded because he had no idea what to do/how to play them. While as far as a feel-good story is concerned, Pham's win was indeed impressive, it probably doesn't do a whole lot to support the notion that poker is a game of skill and not one of luck though...
