Phil Galfond Takes Down Bracelet

Online poker whizz Phil Galfond took down a precious gold on Monday, winning event #29 of the 2015 WSOP, the $10k 2-7 Single Draw championship event, which saw him top the smallest field the 2015 WSOP has produced thus far: 77 players. While small indeed, the field was comprised almost exclusively of well-stacked and experienced poker professionals, so besting it was by no means a small feat. Galfond took down $224.3k for his efforts - money which isn't at all impressive from his perspective: he had indeed played for cash game pots larger than that. The accomplishment however, which came on poker's largest stage is something extremely difficult to pin a price-tag on. As said above, despite the small starting field, Galfond's ride to the top was everything but smooth. Even during the heads-up stage of the event, he needed Lady Luck's assistance big time to overcome a 3-1 chip deficit at one point.

The final hand of the tournament saw both players push all-in before making an actual move. They both ended up drawing one, and then Galfond showed 8,6,5,2 against Schulman's 9,6,4,3. A 7 landed for Galfond and that was it.
Schulman was the only other player who scored a 6-figure payday at the event: his second place was rewarded with $138.6k. Dan Smith, the player who finished the penultimate day with the largest stack, finished 3rd for $87.8k. Erik Seidel finished 4th for $59.5k, Jon Turner came in 5th for $42.2k and Eli Elezra ended up in 6th, taking down $31.4k.
Galfond said that while he considered single draw the purest form of poker, he did not play it often. He does play quite a bit of 2-7 Triple Draw online though.
