Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the most famous player of us all? I good question as the short list of 2009 Poker Hall of Fame finalists is announced.
It's official, the most famous poker players in the world have been whittled down to just 9 players. After much process and voting, 9 players have emerged as the most famous and it is now up to a prestigious board to determine which of the 9 will make it in to the Hall of Fame. The board will be made up of the 15 Hall of Fame members who are still alive, and a further 15 people from the media world; their choice will not be easy.
The nine players that appear on the shortlist include both the biggest names and the biggest poker sites, for example PokerStars and FullTiltPoker. Barry Greenstein, Tom McEvoy, and Daniel Negreanu of PokerStars, Phil Ivey and Erik Seidel of FullTiltPoker, Mike Sexton of PartyPoker plus Dan Harrington, Men Nguyen, and Scotty Nguyen, make up the 9.
The final decision will come on November 7th and a special Hall of Fame dinner ceremony will be held during the dinner break of the WSOP Main Event Final Table during which the player who receives 75% or more of the vote will become the most famous player of them all. The board members have until October 2nd to make their decision at which point their ballots must be turned in. In making their decisions the board members must take into account the players' achievements, reputation, dedication, and contribution to the poker world.
The Poker Hall of Fame was created by Benny Binion in 1979 to preserve and honour the names of great poker players from each generation. Binion was himself inducted in to the Hall of Fame in 1990. The newest addition will be the 38th member of the Poker Hall of Fame.
