Poker Pro Eric Riley’s Incredible Atlantic City Story

Poker pro Eric Reily wasn’t the definition of a headliner. Sure, he has been a profitable player, but he’s never really quit his job to play full time, and his career earnings – while impressive – are nowhere near the top of the pops. He had never really made any headlines either until the other day that is, when he went through something out of a television action series, escaping a double robbery at the end of an Atlantic City poker playing tour.
The story began about two weeks ago, when Riley checked into the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa – one of the fresh recipients of an
online poker license in Atlantic City – in possession of an $80k bankroll. Online poker hadn’t yet been legalized then, so he took his money to the brick and mortar tables, eking out a $20k profit. It was during his Borgata stay that he met up with a person named Junior, who obviously learned about the large sums of cash that his new “friend” was carrying around.
When the time came for Riley to head home, Junior offered to drive him to the airport, which he eventually did. As Riley got out of the car to take his bag out of the trunk, his “friend” drove away with the bag, with the trunk wide-open. Riley quickly got into a cab and followed the perpetrator, catching up with him at a red light. He moved quickly, snatching his bag from the open trunk, as Junior sped off again. Just as he was breathing a sigh of relief, two men got out of a black Camry that had pulled up and told him they were undercover policemen, offering him a ride. Riley got in, but just as he was beginning to tell the “law enforcement agents” about what he’d just been through, they pulled a gun on him demanding the money. Clutching his bag, Riley bailed out of the moving vehicle, managing to eventually flag down a cab and to reach a police station.
