The PokerNews Cup’s $10,200 H.O.R.S.E. event was a genuine high-stakes affair. So much so as a matter of fact, that the high buy-in only attracted 6 of the deepest stacked players around. Tony G, Joseph Hachem, Marc Vos, Billy Argyros, Van Marcus and James Obst took part. At least players didn’t have to break themselves to reach the final table.
The 18 year old Obst was the player who attracted the most attention, since he was just about the only unknown factor in the event. Word has it, aged 16 Obst was banned from playing internet poker (an activity he had been indulging in for several years) when it was uncovered that he had been underage at the time. Now 18, the ban has been lifted and he soon began dominating the virtual tables in some of the biggest online poker rooms.
The goddess of poker didn’t treat Joe Hachem kindly this day. Everything seemed to work out against him in the early going as he lost one big pot after another. First, it was Tony G who relieved him of a significant pot in Stud Hi/Lo, then it was the common handiwork of Billy Argyros and the aforementioned James Obst which cost him another. With his back against the wall, the 2005 WSOP Big Dance winner shoved all-in on an Ace upcard in Stud Hi, but he managed nothing more than a pair of 2s against Mark Vos’ boat.
Obst was the next to find himself on the receiving end of Lady Luck’s wrath. He lost a big pot in Stud Hi/Lo in a three-way hand which had Argyros and Vos both shooting for the gold. That same hand also hit Vos pretty bad, so the next two bust-outs were basically set up for the final blow.
It didn’t take Obst long to find the rail at the hands of Tony G. He shot for a low but failed to fill it as Gouga made a small two pair for the high.
Mark Vos would finish in 4th place as a direct result of the crippling blow he had taken on the aforementioned hand.
The three remaining players, namely Tony G, Van Marcus and Billy Argyros then agreed on a three-way chop. The official winner would be Gouga who had the biggest stack at the time of the deal.
