PokerNews Cup Alpine Main Event Day 1 report

Day 1 of the PokerNews Cup Alpine Main event saw 126 players cough up the €1,500 buy-in and belly up to the tables of the Alpine Palace Hotel and Card Casino in the picturesque ski resort of Saalbach Hinterglemm in Austria.
Among the field were Tony G, Marcel Luske and David Saab as well as John Duthie and recently crowned EPT champion Sandra Naujoks.
The end of the first day of hostilities saw only 33 survivors, with Mark Vos having built up a huge chip lead.

With the numerous quality time possibilities offered by the location, many of the players found it difficult to focus on the poker action. Marcus Golser was one of these players, as he had broken an arm on the ski slopes before the event and he arrived sporting a cast.
Peter Overdijk was one of the notable early eliminations, as his K,K got cracked in the first level of play.

Tony G didn’t fare much better either. He shoved all-in on a flop of Kh,10h,5h with Kd, 7d and got called by Erich Kollmann who had a nut flush draw with his Ah,7. The turn brought an A though and gave the lead to Kollmann. The meaningless 6 on the river sealed Guoga’s fate. Noah Boeken and David Saab were also early victims of Day 1.

Marc Vos began building up his stack after the dinner break. He first added Kristap Krapans’ stack to his, on a dramatic hand in which his flopped boat triumphed over Krapans’ nut flush. That hand signaled the beginning of a winning spree for Vos, who eventually finished the day with almost twice as many chips as the second place guy.

Another person who found the Day 1 proceedings extremely lucrative was Marcel Luske. He too built a large stack to finish the day with, first at the expense of Marc Jaquetin then at that of Dennis Uhrenholt.
The story of the last few hand of Day 1 was Liv Boeree though who found herself down to her last few chips with just a few hands to go. She quickly tripled up, but then was sent to the rail in one of the last hands of the day.
