If anybody deserves to take down a SCOOP title, Mickey Petersen must be the man. After all, he has finished runner-up in two SCOOP events already, having come so tantalizingly close to his ultimate goal yet falling short every time.
This year, Petersen means business when it comes to the SCOOP. The Spring Championship of Online Poker runs between May 6 and May 20 and it will award $30 million in prize-pools, spread over no fewer than 120 events. That means Petersen will have exactly 120 chances to grab that coveted and elusive SCOOP title of his.
The biggest single online poker prize of Petersen’s career came in a SCOOP event in 2010, when he came second in a $2.1k buy-in tournament.
Petersen certainly has the momentum and he’s in a good-enough shape to finally break through in the SCOOP. He’s been playing in many high profile live
poker tournaments lately, and his results have been quite impressive too. He played in the EPT’s Monte Carlo Grand Final and he took down $444k in the EPT’s Copenhagen Main Event back in February.
According to several PokerStars pros, the true value is in the SCOOP’s non-Holdem events. While non-Holdem and mixed games aren’t particularly popular online, the SCOOP has thus far managed to draw nice crowds to its Badugi and 8-Game tables, being one of a handful of online events to be able to do so.
Last year, the SCOOP saw 107k players hit its tables from 156 different countries. With the popularity of the event on a clear ascending path and the media hype surrounding it, it isn’t unrealistic to expect even more participants this year.
Mickey Petersen will definitely be among the players to watch at this edition of the SCOOP, and there will be others looking to grab a title too. According to Petersen himself, Calvin Anderson and Shaun Deeb are two guys the public may want to keep an eye on.
