It is now official: Phillip Gruissem has an incredible knack for winning high roller events. During the previous stop of the
EPT, Grussiem managed to best a starting field of 58 to win the €10k High Roller event, taking down a top prize of €234.5k. That time around, he knocked out players like Steve O’Dwyer and Sami Kelopuro from the final table.
This time, Gruissem defeated start of the day chip leader Igor Kurganov heads-up to take home the title yet again.
At the beginning of the day, it didn’t look like Gruissem was going to mount any kind of threat for the front runners. Together with Michael Tureniec, he was one of the final table short-stacks.
Tureniec was forced to commit on the very first hand of the final table and he busted out right away. Gruissem was unfazed though. He managed to work his stack up a little courtesy of Rob Akery. Sam Trickett went out in 7th place, and Gruissem managed to score a huge pot by sending Joel Nordkvist to the rail in 6th. Gruissem had an A,Q against Nordkvist’s K,Q and the board landed a bunch of bricks.
The next elimination, that of Adrian Bussman, was of Gruissem’s doing too. Gruissem had pocket 10s against Bussman’s A,5o and he proceeded to hit a boat to score the kill.
Olivier Busquet was bounced in 4th place and Rob Akery fell in 3rd to set up the heads-up stage between Kurganov and Gruissem.
Kurganov started the final dash with the chip lead: he had 2.4 million chips to Gruissem’s 1.3 million. Gruissem took to the uphill battle well though and soon, he took the lead.
The final hand of the event saw Kurganov shove all-in holding Q,6o. Gruissem pounced on the opportunity to put an end to the tournament and he made the call with pocket 9s. The board failed to hit either player and Gruissem pocketed the £450.2k prize.
